I remember the first time I met Jason Jetplane. He seemed shy and reserved. This is proof that you should never judge a book by its cover. He gave me a copy of his cd and when I asked how he’d classify it, he looked up in the sky and said, “different”. While I would agree with that, I would also add “refreshing”, to the list.

Our next meeting was a live performance at Moods Music during a showcase. Since I knew Jason would be performing I decided to check him out. I was interested to see how he would be live and I must say, I was impressed. The live experience tells a lot. His passion for his craft was personified. He definitely was a different person in front of a crowd.

The album,Love Boulevard, is a mix of electronic soulful sounds with pop undertones. I haven’t quite heard anything like his music, which makes me like it even more.  He’s confident and comfortable with taking chances vocally and going against the grain.  I dig that. My favorite songs on the album, are the title track, ‘Love Boulevard’ which is a catchy tune that promises to be stuck in your head. Another one of my favorites is ‘Distant Star‘. It’s sexy and it tickles my eardrums . “Jetplanes” is another favorite tune on the album. Jason Jetplane is a talented musician, producer, and artist. I’m confident that huge things are in-store for Mr.Jetplane in the near future. Catch him in the sky…

ASunshine

Last weekend Atlanta was given a taste of “sunshine” as the show opener for Eric Roberson.  Although a little tardy to the show, I was glad to hear Avery sing a few tunes.  An amazing vocal ability and stage presence to boot, she made a lot of people pay attention(including me).  When she covered Jill Scott songs, the crowd was on its feet.  A talented pianist, Avery*Sunshine is gearing up for he r self-titled release of her  album on June 21st(the first day of Summer).  Be sure to support!

If you’d like to sample some of what we got live, check out the songs below.  You’ll see why Avery*Sunshine is ADDIKTS APPROVED!

FAN FUNDING KEEPS DYING MUSIC INDUSTRY ALIVE

Indie artists invite fans to be part of record-making process

(Brooklyn, NY) – What happens when a singer/songwriter hopeful moves from South Carolina to New York City on a wing and a prayer? Fans kick in and make it work. That support has proven invaluable.

R&B/soul artist Collette released her independent debut “Experience Collette” in 2008, earning notable radio airplay and attention in the U.S. and abroad. She snagged opening gigs with huge names in urban music, from Chrisette Michele to Talib Kweli, indie soul titan Eric Roberson and more.

A highly anticipated CD was the logical next step. But in a sagging economy with a recording industry in transition, this proved challenging. Even with a fan base and exciting new material, she needs help.

Enter Kickstarter.com, an intriguing website where creative artists drum up donations for their projects. Musicians, writers and all types of artisans post project profiles, offering rewards in return for backers’ support. Collette’s rewards range from signed advance copies of CDs to original music composed just for the donor, and more.

“I chose to do my fundraising through Kickstarter because it’s super engaging, kind of like a community. People can go there and really feel like they’re a part of making my CD, almost as if they were in the studio with me,” Collette said.

Visitors to Collette’s profile see a cheeky video clip detailing her musical past and what she’s working to accomplish. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/collette/start-a-musical-revolution-with-collette.  Rewards are offered for donations from $5 (free download of the entire CD), all the way up to $1,000 (a live concert in the donor’s home).

It’s a great way for artists to engage in modern day patronage – but there is a catch. At the outset, artists are required to set a goal and a deadline. If the deadline arrives without enough pledges made to reach their stated goal, artists collect $0. Any pledges received are simply cancelled. We are confident Collette’s fans and supporters won’t let that happen.

Collette’s project must raise $3,000 in pledges by June 1st.  She’s currently about halfway there, but admits that initially enthusiastic response has cooled.

So what happens when an optimistic singer’s fundraising stalls at about the halfway mark? If her bold move to the city that never sleeps is any indicator, her fans will help her keep her dream alive. With continued fan support, we’re pretty sure her grit and mettle will make it work – and she will make some sweet music in the process!

ADDIKTS APPROVED:Album Review- Leela James “My Soul”

leelajames

Her third album in the game and with a poofy hairstyle, that most natural girls covet, Ms. James has returned with My Soul.  Her voice is different, hard almost and definitely recognizable from the time she sings the first note.  Being the ADDIKT I am, I had the opportunity to see her live years ago.  She sounds exactly the same in person.  Leela James is an old soul, in a young body.  Her voice oozes pain and struggle, but also the honesty of love. ”I Ain’t New To This” describes what I mean by personifying anger and pain musically, while putting her stamp on the industry. Now a part of Stax Records, she gives her former label the musical finger with this track.

“Mr. Incredible-Ms. Unforgettable” is a nice duet with Raheem Devaughn.  And what would an album be without a classic ‘break-up’ song.  “It’s Over” is simple, but when Leela says it…it really is over! ”If It’s Wrong” describes throwing caution to the wind and involving yourself in love  lust at whatever cost.  My favorite joint on the album (right now-it changes) would be “Supa Luva”.  You gotta listen to see why!
