u.city

I found out about this group while listening to Pandora Radio a couple weeks ago. In the midst of the familiar voices of Musiq, Dwele, Carl Thomas and Donell Jones I heard two new voices. West Philladelphia natives Aziz and Joshua Collins, caught my ear almost immediately with ‘Senseless.’ This sexy track made me want to light some candles, run some bath water and pour a glass of wine. In true ADDIKT fashion I took to the net to see what I could find on the group. After checking out a few videos I was impressed with the talent of these brothers. And even more so after reading their bio:

For many artists, appealing to diverse audiences is no easy feat. But for West Philadelphia natives Josh and Aziz Collins of the R&B/ Soul duo U.City (formerly United Soul), this task is accomplished with ease, style, and some good music. With their debut album Reservations, released in 2005, U.City created a fusion of soul, rock, funk and hip hop all in one original sound. A sound that continues to engage crowds and make instant fans out of first-time listeners. Reservations serves as a reminder of soul music as it once was. The project features music that “warms the heart and reminds one of love lost, found and yearned for,” Aziz declares. Included on the album is the sultry single “Best of Me,” which won the group the 2003 Heineken Music Initiative/ASCAP Foundation R&B Grant, an award that recognizes the best rising songwriters across the country. Another single, “He Don’t,” was featured on Hidden Beach Recordings’ compilation album “Hidden Hits” released in 2003. 2008 has found U.City with the release of their sophomore project, “The Fall,” an album which will give fans a taste of something different. The music embodies a new spirit and represents the evolution of the group over the last three years. “Our sound is our own. It is exactly sincere; people don’t have to feel like they are listening to soul artists trying to do rock, hip-hop, and pop,” says Josh. Not just stellar performers but gifted songwriters, the duo has impressed upon industry favorites, including husband and wife combo Kindred the Family Soul, who perform the U.City-penned track “Hey” on their third album “The Arrival.” The group’s talents also earned them a spot on the 2005 VH1 Soul Tour where they shared the stage with Kindred and Jaguar Wright in Washington D.C. and New York City. Still, appreciation for U.City’s work reaches far beyond the boundaries of their immediate region. The group made its international debut when they performed at the Jazz Café in London, leaving the crowd at once pleasantly surprised and anxious for more. Though the two are not related by blood as their identical last names suggest, the kindred musical connection explains why Josh and Aziz identify as brothers. The artistic chemistry and vocal contrasts of the two, an ideal mixture of refined smoothness and raw strength, creates an unforgettable combination. And this combination continues to create work that will stand apart and ultimately bring authenticity and depth to an industry that is starving to be fed substance. Throwback Thursday: Eric Roberson – ‘The Moon’

Gotta love VH1 Soul for this one. The clothes, the hair, just the whole vibe of this song and video scream 90’s and I love it. Whenever I hear this song it reminds of the Aaron Hall, Guy, New Jack Swing era. I think if things had gone differently with Warner Bros., Eric Roberson could have been a big part of that movement. But as fate would have it he became the Aaron Hall/Teddy Riley hybrid of the underground soul world. With a strong but smooth voice and undeniable writing ability, this is one occasion where I am so happy the record company got it wrong. As an independent artist Erro has released 7 albums including a compilation CD and live CD/DVD over the last 14 years. How many mainstream artists are still making solid albums after 14 years in the game? How many mainstream artist make it past the sophmore jinx before they’re dropped by their label. Not many…

The DC Injektion: Meshell Ndegéocello

The DC Injektion: Meshell Ndegéocello

The DC Injektion: Meshell Ndegéocello

The music of singer-songwriter and bassist, Meshell Ndegéocello can be considered many things including seductive, political, sexual and even uncomfortable. I consider her music to be extreme, courageous and difficult to label. Nonetheless, the Grammy nominated, 20-plus year veteran of infused Go-Go, Hip Hop, Rock, R&B, New Wave and Punk delivers music you can feel beyond that of a toe-tap. The chords of her bass guitar puts you in a scene that sets the stage for what she’s about to deliver lyrically. Her lyrics then find their way into your mental and emotional space; making you feel whatever she wants you to. Think I’m joking? Listen to “Fool of Me” from the Love and Basketball soundtrack. When she performed the song on October 8th at the BlackCat in Washington D.C, it can almost be guaranteed that even if listeners had never been hurt by love, they will believe they had been after hearing the song. The power in her poetry has also managed to expose social issues that have fueled much criticism. Case and point: “Dead Nigga Blvd., Pt. 1″ from her 2002 album, Bitter:

You try to hold on to some Africa of the past
One must remember
Its other Africans that helped enslave your ass
‘Cause everybody’s
Just trying to make to make that dollar
Remember what Jesse used to say?
I am somebody
No longer do I blame others
For the way that we be
‘Cause niggas need to redefine
What it means to be free

For most of her show in D.C., she performed a medley of tracks such as “Die Young” and “Blood on the Curb” from her most recent album, Devil’s Halo. Fans of her first two albums, Plantation Lullabies and Peace Beyond Passion were left disappointed when she said goodnight without having performed tracks from either of them. The Washington D.C. native did, however live up to musical expectations and her humble personality left fans adoring her even more.
